Private finance initiatives (PFIs) could be dropped if protests against them grow, said John Gains, chief executive of building firm John Mowlem. He warned last week that attacking pfis had become a “dangerous national sport” which could be “disastrous” for the country. Mowlem is engaged in a range of PFI schemes, including the building and management of South Tees Acute Hospital.

ScottishPower plans to build a £150 million wind farm that could supply 150,000 homes. The development, 10 miles south of Glasgow, will be the largest of its kind in Europe and boost the UK's wind generation capacity by almost 60 per cent.

National Audit Office reports about the value for money of private finance initiative-funded maintenance of the main buildings of the Treasury and the Ministry of Defence will be published in November and December. The National Audit Office reports will determine whether the projects have provided value for money.
Euro gets thumbs down_2


Only one-third of British businesses are firmly in favour of joining the European single currency, according to an ICM Research survey of over 1,000 chief executives. The remaining two-thirds either ruled out the idea completely or wanted to keep their options open. Most of those polled said Britain was unlikely to join the euro during this parliament.
India to replace Migs_2


India is awaiting an offer from BAE Systems on the price of 66 Hawk jet trainers to replace the country's ageing Russian Mig planes, which have claimed the lives of its pilots in 85 accidents. Russia denies technical problems were to blame, and claims India has been buying unreliable and unauthorised spares from Ukrainian factories. India refutes the claim.
