Ten illegal workers have been arrested after a UK Border Agency raid on a sandwich factory in Milton Keynes.

Paul Ross, managing director of industrial, commercial and construction recruiter Barker Ross, which placed the staff at Buckingham Foods, told Recruiter the agency had completed all the necessary checks.

Government body the Gangmasters Licensing Authority has given notice it will revoke the licence of Michael Smith of AAW Contract Services, after finding him “not fit and proper” to hold a licence.

The decision came after a “major investigation” into the treatment of gang labour used to pick flowers in Cornwall and Scotland.

Unemployment in Britain rose again in March, with official figures showing that the number of jobless rose to 2.2m,  a 13-year high.

Unemployment is up by 244,000 since December, and by nearly 600,000 in the past year. The unemployment rate jumped from 6.7% in February to 7.1% in March.

The number of people claiming benefits in March climbed 57,000 to just over 1.5 m.
