Employers can minimise the risk of hiring candidates that are ineligible to work in the UK by using agencies, according to recruiters. Attorney General Baroness Scotland was fined £5,000 last week for employing a housekeeper who was not legally allowed to work in the UK.

The Office of Fair Trading OFT is close to completing its investigation into alleged breaches of competition law by eight recruitment agencies in the construction sector. An OFT spokesperson told Recruiter that following the investigation, first reported in Recruiter in July 2006, decisions would be made “soon - this autumn”.

Travel recruiter C&M is demonstrating its green credentials to suppliers, customers and staff following its decision to sign up to the Green Achiever scheme.
The scheme, developed by environmental consultancy E4 environment, requires business to complete a questionnaire to outline its responsibilities and receive a listing in the Green Achiever online directory.
BT has announced it is to shed 15,000 jobs this year, most of which will go in the UK as it reported losses of £134m.
The BBC reports that BT’s problems stem from its global services unit, which handles the network systems of big organisations. BT added it had taken a near £1.5bn write-down at this unit.
International recruiter Michael Page posted a fall in its UK profits for its half-year results. Revenue fell by 27% to £364.7m from £500m, while gross profits slumped to £178.8m, down from £292.7m. Operating profit was £32.2m, from £84.9m in 2008.
