- Pub chain JD Wetherspoon said 200 jobs have been created after it invested £5m in opening five new pubs in Minehead, Bodmin, Doncaster, Oldham and Sutton, taking the company’s UK estate to 713 outlets.

- HSBC said it was cutting 500 UK jobs following a review of the business and “current economic conditions”.
- Investment bank Credit Suisse is cutting 650 jobs in the UK. It has offices in London, Birmingham and Manchester.
- Motoring and cycling retailer Halfords said it would cut about 200 posts from its 450 branches and 50 jobs from its head office in Redditch, Worcestershire.
- Luxury sports car manufacturer Aston Martin is planning to axe 600 jobs at its factory in Gaydon, Warwickshire.
- BBC Resources, the corporation’s commercial post-production and studios arm, is cutting 210 jobs — about 30% of its workforce.
- Telegraph Media Group confirmed it would cut 50 jobs (10%) from its editorial staff due to a fall in advertising revenue.
- The world’s biggest steelmaker ArcelorMittal will cut 9,000 administrative and office jobs (3% of its workforce) in a drive to save $1bn (£646m).
- Germany’s Bavarian state bank BayernLB plans to cut 5,600 jobs — 29% of its workforce.
