New Rakuten software development centre in Belfast creates jobs

Japan-headquartered tech firm Rakuten is to set up a fintech software development centre in Belfast, with the creation of 20 jobs.

Announcing the firm’s expansion, regional development agency Invest Northern Ireland revealed it has offered Rakuten £140k to support the new centre, which will initially focus on developing blockchain technology, the technology underpinning the digital currency Bitcoin.

The Belfast-based blockchain lab on Ormeau Avenue will provide internal IT services for Rakuten’s global business and customer base. Recruitment for the roles is progressing, with 11 of the 20 roles already filled. Remaining open positions include roles for both experienced software professionals and graduates.
