Labour shortages in the Thai fishing industry has prompted a government suggestion that ex-prisoners should be employed in the sector, according to the National News Bureau of Thailand.

Labour minister Surasak Kanjanarat this week said the shortages presented an opportunity to provide employment to ex-prisoners, allowing them to re-establish themselves back into society.

The ministry will offer employment in the sector to “well behaved prisoners” who have almost completed their prison terms.

Association for the promotion of Thai Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (ATSME) president Penthip Pornchaded supported the government plan.

She said there were about 300,000 people incarcerated that will not be able to easily find employment on their release.
