Car manufacturer Ford is to create 318 jobs at its Dagenham, London site with an additional £190m investment in its engine plant, according to a statement from the company.
It is to create low-carbon diesel engines for cars and commercial vehicles.
The investment includes a £8.9m grant from the government’s Regional Growth Fund.
This is the second phase in the company’s plan to produce new engines following a £287m investment, also supported by the growth fund, to create low-carbon engines for commercial vehicles.
In the statement, Prime Minister David Cameron said Ford’s investment was a “vote of confidence in our long-term economic plan to back business, create more jobs and secure a brighter future for Britain”.
According to a Department for Business tweet, the automotive sector is worth £10.7bn to the UK economy with 1.6m cars produced a year, employing 141,000 people.
