UK still most attractive market for overseas investment and jobs, finds EY

Wed, 5 Jun 2013The UK remained Europe’s most attractive market for foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2012, with 697 such projects creating 30,311 jobs last year.

This is according to professional services firm Ernst & Young's ‘European Attractiveness Survey', available online and based on interviews with over 800 global senior executives. It records a moderate 3% drop in the total number of FDI projects across Europe, to 3,797, creating 170,434 jobs over the continent.

Germany has overtaken the UK in manufacturing sector FDI, and is catching up in service industries – with Central and Eastern Europe overtaking Western Europe in overall project volumes.

Europe is responsible for 54.3% of FDI projects within Europe, ahead of the 27.5% of projects, which originate in the US.

The Ernst & Young study contrasts with findings from a US business school reported by recruiter.co.uk last week, showing Germany as the most competitive economy in Europe, with both Sweden and Switzerland ahead of Britain. However, in keeping with the findings of a study from recruitment firm Hydrogen last month, London and its Silicon Roundabout mean the UK capital remains the top city for FDI both in terms of investor confidence and actual investment.
