Wed, 26 Jun 2013Retailer Sainsbury’s has opened a major new distribution centre in South-East London creating 600 jobs.
This is part of the company’s ongoing plans to develop its London and South-East convenience store network, with the addition of a further 1,000 shops.
The company has already taken on 350 people in the Thameside Distribution Centre, and a further 250 will be added when fully operational. The £30m facility will support 200 convenience stores stretching from London to Brighton.
Last November, the firm said it would create 10,000 new jobs in its convenience business over the next three years as it opened new stores across the country. In March this year, the company announced more specific plans to open 50 new convenience stores by 2014
The new Thameside facility is operated in partnership with supply chain solutions firm Wincanton. It is 15 years since Sainsbury’s opened its first convenience store in Hammersmith in West London.
Last month, recruiter.co.uk reported the news that one of the US’s most wanted fugitives had been recruited into a role in a store in Gravesend
