Specialist digital recruitment agency Ecom has launched a fully optimised mobile site, which it claims will be a first for its sector. Vincent O’Shea, managing director, told Recruiter that he believes factors such as the take-up of the iPhone means mobile recruitment will finally come into its own.

“This year, without doubt, has finally seen mobile internet devices go mainstream. In our sector, people are on their iPhones all the time - downloading apps and using these devices to access the internet in a way not seen before,” he said, adding: “I’ve also noticed an increase in demand from clients for digital specialists with mobile design and similar skills, which is another sign.”

The mobile site has been designed by Studio AP which also created Ecom’s animated main website. “Clearly, there are things you can’t do on the mobile screen that you can do on a PC screen, so it’s a case of paring down and focusing more on information and making it accessible to the candidates,” said O’Shea. “It’s more about keeping the constant communication between us and the candidate, and applying digital technology in a business sense to improve our service.”

Candidates can apply for a job from the mobile site via email or call a consultant at Ecom. They can also follow Ecom on Twitter via a mobile device and sign up to specific job feeds, such as ‘creative’ and ‘technical’, so they receive postings relevant to them. “We’re encouraging our freelancers in particular to sign up to Twitter because for them it’s all about getting that next piece of work,” said O’Shea.

Independent research company Forrester predicts mobile internet adoption will grow from 13-39% in Western Europe by 2014 and the next decade will see it replicate the success story of the PC-based internet.
