Recruiter’s meeting with Stephen Moir, our cover profile subject, took place in Cambridgeshire on what could be called ‘citizenship day’, when new Britons take the oath of citizenship, are congratulated by the county’s lord lieutenant and celebrate with tea and biscuits afterward. On a personal note, seeing the new citizens-to-be gather on the ground level of Shire Hall recalled my own citizenship ceremony there in 2007. It reminded me also of the tremendous bredth of responsibilities public sector employees carry, and of the unfair myths surrounding their work — ie, that the only good ideas ever emerge from the private sector and that the public sector is the ultimate safe haven for employment. Mr Moir turns both of their notions on their head. With regard to the latter, he lightly suggests that transformation for public sector HR may shortly be ahead. With regard to the first, he has an entrepreneurial spirit, a commitment to useful metrics and good ideas that may give many external recruiters and job board operators a well-justified run for their money. Thank goodness for public servants like Stephen Moir, says this tax-paying citizen.
