Committee slams MoD_2


The Ministry of Defence’s purchasing record has been attacked by the House of Commons public account committee. In a report, David Davis, the committee’s chairman, called the MoD’s performance “abysmal”, citing delays in its weapons systems by an average of three and a half years and over-runs of £3 billion.

Food giant Heinz is to source more than $500 million in goods and services through an agreement with its e-sourcing solutions provider FreeMarkets. Scott Allen, Heinz’s chief procurement officer, said the deal demonstrates that e-sourcing now forms a core part of its procurement operations.

Laporte to save £60m_2


Chemical manufacturer Laporte expects to save more than 7 per cent of its £60 million annual indirect purchasing spend through e-procurement. Electronic catalogues will allow staff to order items direct.

Half the IT managers in the UK believe that software suppliers will milk the switch of IT systems to euros, according to a Computer Weekly/ Harvey Nash survey. They claimed suppliers offered little support to customers, with late and often ambiguous advice. The survey also revealed that many IT managers have not seriously considered the impact of a euro switch.

Virgin Trains has saved 5 per cent of its £3.5 million annual IT budget through e-procurement and plans to extend the scheme to other departments. “We have ditched all of our cumbersome paper files and forms,” said Glen Compton, technical procurement manager at Cap Gemini Ernst and Young, which handles IT procurement for Virgin Trains.
