Despite the government’s historic bailouts and an eye-watering fiscal stimulus, one recruiter remains positive about a whole raft of opportunities in the public sector next year.

David Pyle, spokesman for Synergy Group, which has added a candidate training service to its offering, says the company still expects to grow by 10% next year and by the same amount in 2010.

Multi-sector recruiter Manpower has reported that net earnings for fourth-quarter trading fell to $79.2m (£55m) from $133.1m (£92.45m) in 2007, while fourth-quarter revenues were $4.6bn (£3.2bn), a decrease of 18% from the year earlier period.

The nursing and social care sector is suffering from a severe skills shortage, according to a new survey.

The survey, from the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), shows that 80% of the REC’s nursing and social care sector group reported problems related to a shortage of skilled labour.
