Heidrick & Struggles has launched a new Government & Defense Tech Practice, aimed at serving the growing demand for technology leadership within public sector organisations. With governments estimated to account for 10% of global technology and IT services spending, the firm sees this as a significant market opportunity. The practice consolidates the company’s experience from over 200 engagements to provide leadership solutions for organisations delivering technology to national, state and local governments worldwide.

The new practice will support clients by offering leadership search, development and organisational effectiveness services. It brings together more than 30 experienced partners across sectors such as IT services, aerospace and defence, energy and private equity, operating globally across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The initiative addresses the increasing reliance of governments on advanced technologies like AI, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity and robotics.

• Workforce management solutions firm Matrix has supported more than 10,000 individuals across the UK into employment between March 2024 and April 2025 through its Social Value team. The efforts focused on a wide range of community initiatives, including employability workshops, career guidance and volunteering opportunities. These programmes were designed to help students, jobseekers and public sector employees gain essential skills and access new career pathways.

• UK start-up Project Brains has launched ProdigyPB, an AI-powered platform designed to revolutionise job description creation and recruitment. Tailored for SMEs, growing businesses, and HR teams, ProdigyPB helps define precise hiring needs by aligning job roles with specific business challenges. The tool generates clear, bias-free job descriptions in seconds and enables users to engage with vetted fractional specialists from Project Brains’ talent pool, according to a company statement. ProdigyPB is currently available in Beta across the UK.

Jobmatch Sweden, a leader in occupational psychological testing, is expanding in Norway through a new partnership with consulting firm Sund Raad. Sund Raad, which focuses on enhancing employee engagement for small and medium-sized businesses, will integrate Jobmatch’s DNV-certified Talent test into its services. This marks Jobmatch’s second partnership in Norway, following its 2022 collaboration with Hapro Jobb og Karriere. Jobmatch Talent is a scientifically validated tool used for recruitment and employee development, according to the company press release.

• STEM recruitment specialist Matchtech has launched STEM Futures, a free, on-demand employability platform aimed at helping young people break into engineering and technology careers. The programme includes expert-led sessions on job search strategies, CV writing, interviews and personal development, and is part of Matchtech’s broader initiative to address the STEM skills gap and support emerging talent.

In addition, Matchtech has awarded the first two grants from its Materna Fund, a £2.5k bursary created to support engineering students facing financial hardship. The inaugural recipients, Sergio Carreno Vargas and David Sarembock from the University of Portsmouth, are using the funds to focus on their studies and development without the added pressure of financial strain.

Meet Life Sciences has launched Synergy, a new standalone service designed to tackle people capability challenges in the life sciences sector that go beyond recruitment. As part of Meet’s evolution into a full-service talent solutions partner, Synergy offers tailored support in areas like workforce planning, leadership development, skills mapping, culture embedding and organisational design. Led by vice-president Kirsty Wilson, the service is built specifically for the life sciences industry and is focused on delivering measurable, outcome-driven solutions. Unlike traditional consulting, Synergy provides hands-on support from design through to implementation, helping clients build the capability needed to grow, adapt and lead in a competitive global market.

Right Management, part of ManpowerGroup, has launched a refreshed brand strategy called ‘The Right Way’. It’s a human-centred, data-backed framework that aligns workforce development with business strategy. The new identity centres on ‘The Right Way loop’, a distinctive visual element with modern colours and typography that will be used across all brand touchpoints.

National student lettings agency launches apprenticeship scheme

In a bid to support young people and grow skilled and knowledgeable individuals for the student lettings sector, loc8me recently launched its 18-month programme, which is open to anyone aged 16-18. The scheme will offer hands-on experience, mentorship and the opportunity to engage in paid work.

Raffaele Russo, founder of loc8me, said: “We’re thrilled to launch this apprenticeship programme, giving young professionals a real chance to learn, grow and begin building a career in an exciting industry.

“Now more than ever, young people are seeking opportunities, guidance and goals to pursue. With this programme, we’re investing in their future – and in the future of the lettings sector.”

Apprentices will have the chance to study the theoretical and practical elements of the lettings industry, and on starting, they will be given a mentor from the loc8me team to support their development via regular meetings throughout the course.

loc8me now operates in 13 major university cities across the UK, including Loughborough, Durham, Nottingham, Manchester, Leeds, Cardiff, Newcastle, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leicester, Hull, Bath and Bristol.

• Recruitment agency Aligra has opened a new branch in Bristol, led by operations manager Leah Blanchard. Aligra opened its first office in Swindon in 2007, and over the last 15 years has opened additional offices in Andover, Didcot, Hinckley and Newbury.

ScottishPower has launched a paid-to-learn scholarship with its parent company Iberdrola to attract new recruits into the energy sector. The programme will see the company pay a year’s tuition, accommodation and travel expenses for graduates and final-year students while they study at one of 20 top universities across the UK, Europe and beyond.

Applicants can choose from Universities of Cambridge, Strathclyde or the Imperial College of London in the UK, the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas or the Polytechnic Universities of Madrid, Valencia and the Basque Country, in Spain among others.

The application process has now opened and its encouraging students with an interest in engineering, renewable energy, information technology, cybersecurity, sustainability and big data to apply.

• FinTech recruitment brand Storm2 has launched Payments by Storm2, a hyper-specialised sector that connects senior, executive and mid-level professionals with cutting-edge payments companies. The FinTech firm was launched in 2019 by parent company Levin Group.

• Recruitment firm Swift Temps has opened a new office in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The new office is located in Langham House and joins eight existing offices across the Midlands and North-West England. The new Wakefield branch specialises in placing workers in industrial, food, engineering, transport and commercial sectors in both temporary and permanent roles.

• Education and care specialist Bright Horizons plans to enrol 500 new apprentices across the UK, and support 500 existing apprenticeships with its rates of pay. Its popular apprenticeship programme focuses on early years who will work and study towards a Level 2 Early Years Practitioner or Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship through work-based learning. Early Years apprenticeships also include Level 1 and 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English.

• London-headquartered digital healthcare provider and home healthcare provider Cera Care has developed artificial intelligence to predict which staff are at risk of leaving. Cera’s AI technology looks at factors including shift pattern changes for employees; if visits are attended on time; relationships with managers; and the uptake of learning and development opportunities in specific branches, to determine the risk of someone leaving the sector.

The technology aims to prevent 15% of potential leavers from moving elsewhere at scale, and aims to reduce the number of leavers across the system by 50,000 staff a year. By reducing employee turnover, this technology will permit “greater continuity of care”. It also reduces costs as training needs decrease, and allows Cera to grow hours in each branch and deliver excellent care to more people. Cera is initially launching this technology in select locations around the UK, including London, Essex, East and North-East of England, and Scotland, from February 2023.

Futureheads, a design, digital and tech recruitment firm, has announced that it is now B Corp certified. The B Corp verification process administered by the nonprofit, B Lab, measures a company’s social and environmental performance (see Recruiter’s feature here). To become a Certified B Corporation, companies undergo a rigorous review of the impact of their operations and business model on their workers, customers, communities and environment, and must meet a minimum verified score of 80 on the B Impact Assessment tool.

• Intersectional diversity recruiting platform Loop Not Luck has launched to connect underrepresented candidates with tailored career opportunities. Loop Not Luck’s technology harnesses hundreds of self-identified data points, giving candidates a curated shortlist of opportunities and gives companies a tailored list of potential applicants to avoid AI bias. The jobs board works with junior candidates and covers all industries.

Premier Group Recruitment has announced it has opened its eighth office in North Carolina in the US. The recruitment firm has offices in Reading, London, Manchester, Birmingham, Sydney in Australia, Austin, New York and now Raleigh, North Carolina in the US.

• North East-based recruitment firm Talentheads has announced it has moved to a larger office in Morpeth, Northumberland. The firm, which was set up by Sam Spoors in 2020, has taken on six new members of staff in the past 12 months. Lauren Bell and Camille Colligan have been taken on as talent engagement advisers, Alison Jobson, Rose Heppell and Grace Oliver joined as talent partners, and Judith Armatage was hired as a development partner.

• Talent intelligence specialist Wilbury Stratton has launched Wilbury On Demand to help organisations streamline their recruitment process with the latest industry insights and data. It provides users with in-depth analysis across a range of markets, enabling them to find and attract talent.

Bakkavor, a provider of freshly prepared food with 23 manufacturing sites across the UK, has launched its 2023 apprenticeship programme. The firm is recruiting at least 30 apprentices in engineering and 10 in manufacturing. There are also other roles available across finance, HR, food technology, business administration, SHE (safety health and environment), supply chain and continuous improvement. The Programme provides opportunities to gain higher or advanced apprenticeships.

The roles will be based at Bakkavor sites across the UK, including Scotland, Wigan, London, Lincolnshire, Newark, Somerset and Kent. The apprenticeships provide real responsibility from day one, contributing to key business activities and projects, while also allowing for time to study towards a nationally recognised qualification. There is also the opportunity to develop valuable life skills through involvement in local community and charity initiatives and visiting schools as apprentice ambassadors.

• Global executive boutique search firm Calibre One has opened a new office in Boston in the US. It will be led by Molly Robb, who has been appointed partner to head the North-East office. She will work closely with Christos Richards, who leads the practice from the West Coast San Francisco office. Robb has 20 years’ executive recruiting experience, who was previously managing director with BioQuest, part of The Diversified Search Group.

• Scottish recruitment agency Cammach Bryant has announced a brand refresh that will see the Aberdeen-based recruiter for the oil & gas, renewables and space industries renamed Cammach. The company says the rebrand, which took place last month, better reflects the capabilities and make-up of the team. Cammach is owned by investment group GEG Capital, which acquired it in 2017.

• Recruitment firm Capability Jane has rebranded to CJ Talent to reflect the changes seen in the workplace. CJ Talent specialises in bringing together candidates looking for senior roles with organisations that offer flexible or hybrid working.

Deutsche Bank and Queen Mary University of London have launched a new Investment Banking degree apprenticeship programme, which they say is a job with training, combining work with study to gain skills for an investment banking career. The four-year programme, targeted at students completing their A-Levels in 2023 or who have completed their A-Levels in 2022, aims to attract talented students who have an interest in a career in banking. The entry requirements are AAA or UCAS points equivalent, which should include A in A-Level Maths.

As well as at-the-desk training, knowledge development and soft-skills building, the 10 apprentices’ fees will be covered for expert tuition in Queen Mary’s School of Economics and Finance, and they will also receive a competitive salary. Around 20% of their time will be dedicated to learning, with 80% spent ‘on the job’ where they can apply academic skills to their day-to-day work.

• With a combined industry experience spanning more than 40 years, entrepreneurs Lisa Payne and Hannah Sills have launched a specialist recruitment agency for the FMCG and CPG [consumer packaged goods] sectors. Professional Appointments, based in Wardour Street, London, will work with clients and candidates across the UK and Europe. The agency places individuals at all levels in food and drink, fashion, lifestyle, sporting goods, toys and nursery, consumer electronics, health and beauty, packaging and logistics.

• Training provider Realise has pledged to create at least 25,000 apprentices in the next five years in its apprenticeship programme. This will be across sectors including early years education, health and social care, and transport. The training schemes will be open to people of all ages either seeking to move out of unemployment or currently in a job and hoping to upskill. The apprenticeships will be predominantly delivered at levels two, three and five.

• Food services and facilities management company Sodexo has launched Explore at Sodexo on the Youth Employment UK website to create youth career pathways at the company. At Explore at Sodexo, young people can read and watch profiles of current Sodexo apprentices, as well as explore apprenticeship academies, T-Level opportunities and work experience programmes at Sodexo sites across the UK.

Youth Employment UK will help Sodexo to connect with those who are looking to work for a youth-friendly employer. Sodexo offers a wide variety of apprenticeships, with more than 70 available in areas such as IT and business administration, FM, hospitality and catering, healthcare and HR.

Swift Temps has opened a new larger office located at Pure Offices, Oldbury, in Birmingham. The recruitment firm was founded in 2016 by Damian Lee and has nine existing offices across the Midlands and North-West England. The new Birmingham office is part of the company’s continued growth to support workers finding temporary and permanent employment positions.

• Domestic healthcare recruitment agency Tezlom has added new franchisees to its network. These include Tezlom Stratford and Romford, Tezlom Bromley, Tezlom Nottingham, Tezlom Birmingham, Tezlom Cheltenham and Tezlom Canterbury.

UK Power Networks has launched a new digital academy with up to 400 spaces available over five years for employees – including new recruits – on 20 new apprenticeship courses focused on digital and technology skills.

An in-house training team, in partnership with two experienced training providers, will deliver programmes ranging from Apprenticeship Level 3 for business analysts, to Level 7 for cyber security, which is the equivalent of a Master’s degree. Staff are given time to study during the week, with individuals also committing to some home study.

Zurich UK has announced it has 100 new apprenticeship places on offer across the UK, as the insurer continues its drive to attract young talent and futureproof its workforce. Open to applications from this month, the placements will be available across 12 different business areas including data science, operations and IT, finance and claims, and will range from those who are at the start of their insurance career all the way through to Master’s qualifications for those in later stage careers. Applications for the apprenticeship scheme open from 6 February until 19 March.

Top
