UK Hiring Taskforce launches to develop new hiring strategies

With 200 hiring leaders, recruiters, rec tech leaders and more in attendance, including Recruiter, the hiring taskforce kick-off also delivered the news that an association for recruitment technology providers is planned to launch in November “to have one voice with government, to give high risk assurance that they are people of good standing and to help us develop a rec tech roadmap”, said Keith Rosser, who as chair of the Better Hiring Institute is leading the joint force of parliamentarians and hiring leaders. 

“We want a national hiring strategy,” Rosser said in his address at the event. “What do we think the future looks like if we could start again – forget the baggage, forget the medieval CVs, the Victorian references, the industrial revolution, job adverts – and think about actually, what would starting again look like?

“And finally, a technology road map. What would rec tech look like if we had a magic wand? What do we need to consider? What do we need to debate?... What we want from you is your help shaping what needs to be considered, how we need to go forward, what are the things we really should be looking at?”

Organisers are hoping to gather concepts by November from the respective work groups, formed of people who sign up to participate, for strategy, technology and policy. “Those three work streams with then end in those three deliverables later in the year,” Rosser said.

“We want this to be the beginning of a new dawn,” he added. “We want to get leadership once more for the UK in hiring… It’s hard to imagine actually that once upon a time, the UK was a leader in this stuff… We just really haven’t moved forward. Today is our commitment to gain leadership once more.”

Viscount Camrose, shadow secretary of state for science, innovation and technology, will be the honorary president of the rec tech association when formed. 

Speaking on Friday at the taskforce launch, he said: “I’ve been worrying for years that the job market is too inefficient, but that it can be reduced in some sense, to a data problem. And I would love us to start making progress together in that director because actually, in a weird way, although it is a data problem, digitalisation and AI have made it worse. They have made it more difficult rather than less difficult, and I think we can go for some way this afternoon to starting that journey to correcting the problem.”

As examples, Viscount Camrose said: “Far too many jobs are far too overapplied; we see candidates receiving no response – even late on in the process, no response comes. And there are such huge advantages to all of us for doing that. First… if we are going to grow as an economy, we need to be more productive… and just placing people in jobs to which they are genuinely committed is going to boost productivity. 

“Second, economic inactivity. We have too many people who are economically inactive now, and how many of those people remain economically inactive because… it’s just too difficult to embark on the process of finding the next job. The easier we can make it [is] to everybody’s benefit. The third advantage is just national happiness.”

Also speaking at the event was Lord Chris Holmes, Paralympian swimming champion, who in 2023 introduced an AI regulation bill to address concerns about its development, fairness in use, privacy and other issues. He has since reintroduced it, terming it “light touch, right size regulation”, and believing that it has significant potential application in hiring. “If we get fairer hiring, if we get faster hiring, the aim for all of us today and for every day, we can truly have in the world the finest hiring ecosystem we can bring to bear,” he said.

• Global specialist recruitment company Eames Consulting has opened a new office in Philadelphia, focusing on technology and digital enablement. Located at the Wanamaker Building, 100 East Penn Square, this is the recruiter’s second US location, following its New York office, which opened in 2022. The Philadelphia team will be headed up by Steven Stahl, a highly experienced recruiter. Also joining are Sam Youngberg (managing consultant) and Callum Stainer (senior consultant), data and AI recruitment specialists.

Eightfold AI, which helps organisations recruit and retain top talent, and upskill/reskill their entire workforce, has added two new foundational AI products to its portfolio. Expanding its capabilities in talent acquisition, Eightfold introduces AI Interviewer to automate candidate engagement and assessment, enhancing responsiveness and selection outcomes. The company has also launched Digital Twin, a personalised AI model that captures and applies employee knowledge across systems to drive real-time productivity and decision-making.

SF Recruitment has opened a new East Midlands headquarters in Castle Donington, strategically positioned next to East Midlands Airport. The new hub unites the company’s Leicester and Nottingham teams, with the company broadening its expertise into STEM fields, including technology and engineering, alongside its core areas of finance, private equity and corporate services. Over 40 team members will be based at the new headquarters and plans for European growth are underway, according to the company statement.

Aspiring pilots can apply to join fully-funded training programme

Flight training typically costs in excess of £100k.

The programme has been developed to support Jet2.com’s growth, enabling the leisure airline to fly more customers away to enjoy their holidays on an expanding fleet of aircraft.

Jet2FlightPath is open to candidates from all backgrounds (subject to meeting the application criteria) and aims to boost social mobility and promote diversity within the pilot community. To apply, candidates need at least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including maths and a science subject, or equivalent qualifications – making Jet2FlightPath more accessible than other programmes.

The selection process, including assessments and interviews, will see successful candidates invited to take their place on a fully funded 18-month Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) training course in the UK, Spain or US, with courses starting this year. Upon completion of the ATPL course, trainees will then be offered Type Rating training on either an Airbus or Boeing aircraft, before becoming a Jet2.com pilot. Three partners set to deliver this training are Skyborne Airline Academy, Leading Edge and FTE Jerez.

When completing the Jet2FlightPath pilot training programme, trainees will also be fully immersed in the operation and culture at Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, “so that they can understand all the qualities that make up the businesses”, a company statement said. This includes gaining exposure to various customer-facing roles such as cabin crew and ground operations.

Jet2.com plans to put 60 pilots through Jet2FlightPath in the first year of the programme and then expand it to attract “even more” aspiring pilots in the coming years as the company continues to grow, the company said. 

The UK’s third largest airline currently employs over 1,800 pilots and will operate a fleet of up to 135 aircraft this summer, flying customers to sun and leisure city destinations across Europe, the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands from 13 UK airport bases.

• UK start-up Project Brains has launched ProdigyPB, an AI-powered platform designed to revolutionise job description creation and recruitment. Tailored for SMEs, growing businesses, and HR teams, ProdigyPB helps define precise hiring needs by aligning job roles with specific business challenges. The tool generates clear, bias-free job descriptions in seconds and enables users to engage with vetted fractional specialists from Project Brains’ talent pool, according to a company statement. ProdigyPB is currently available in Beta across the UK.

• Specialist recruitment agency Acorn has relocated its Crewe branch to Edleston Road in the town centre. The move coincides with Cheshire East Council’s announcement of a major transformation to Crewe’s town centre.

• Business and financial adviser Grant Thornton and training provider Activate Business School have launched a new leadership and management apprenticeship programme.

The new programme, available to all companies in England, will help employers develop their employees’ skills to become successful managers and future leaders. Larger employers are able to make use of their Apprenticeship Levy to pay, while smaller employers can gain a 90% contribution towards the cost through government investment.

There are already 300 learners on the programme and it is anticipated that more than 1,000 learners per year will be able to access it. Bespoke programmes will be developed and delivered for each employer, covering skills that are required to be a successful manager such as effective communication, managing finance, leading and motivating a team and problem-solving and decision-making.

• Specialist recruiter MERJE has launched MERJE Front-Line Talent, a service aimed at finding entry-level and junior management staff for contact centre teams.

MERJE Front-Line Talent will recruit for roles such as call centre agents, customer service advisers, team leaders, and webchat and social media executives. The new section will be headed up by Sally Cordwell, who joins from Search Consultancy.

• Executive search firm Miramar Global has launched Miramar Talent, which applies the firm’s executive search methodology to the workforce talent process.

The firm, which has offices in London and Philadelphia, says the new product helps businesses to have a greater impact on diversity, meet the demands of digital transformation or simply refresh their high performing teams.

The Management Recruitment Group (MRG) has opened a new office in Gracechurch Street, near Monument tube station after outgrowing its previous London office in King William Street.

The investment in a new office supports the built environment recruiter’s continued expansion of its existing 40-plus strong team.

Irish minister opens ttm Healthcare’s new Manchester office

The new Manchester office for the Irish international healthcare specialist recruitment company, which is headquartered in Ennis, forms part of a three-year multi-million-euro capital investment by ttm Healthcare.

The investment aims to deliver on its ambition to become the largest provider of multidisciplinary healthcare professionals to UK hospitals and healthcare facilities. The new office will employ 15 people.

Airport Placements Ltd (APL) is expanding its recruitment services in Manchester. The airport staffing specialist, based at Birmingham Airport, has opened the new office to serve Manchester and other airports in Northern England and Scotland.

APL, part of the HR GO group of companies, also recently established an operation in Endeavour House, Stansted Airport, in the South-East.

• Global workforce solutions provider Airswift has launched a new model aimed at changing the relationship between operators and companies, known as the Oilfield Service Integration model.

The model aims to provide full transparency into the “hidden” costs associated with third-party services, dramatically reducing total spend. It also allows operators more control over the work carried out on their behalf, from crew size and hours to process and safety.

Arctic Shores, which provides psychometric assessments using game-based technology, is opening an international office in Singapore, and has appointed VJ Posadas as general manager. The new office will serve local clients as well as those in India, Australia and Indonesia.

• Birmingham-headquartered executive search firm Berwick Partners has launched an office in Amsterdam to increase its foothold in the European market, and strengthen links between the UK and the EU.

The firm has also introduced two practices and made three hires (see Appointments, 16-20 April 2018). A dedicated ‘place’ practice will serve the local government sector, while Berwick Talent Solutions will deliver project and volume recruitment of senior and specialist talent for clients as they expand, relocate or undergo change and transformation.

• The founding director of construction recruiter Contract Scotland has launched a new consultancy business – Coresco. Colin Woodward revealed his new firm will work with new and expanding recruitment agencies, as well as employers trying to get the best value for money from their recruitment suppliers.

Woodward said: “Although I’m still the majority shareholder in Contract Scotland, which currently has a turnover of £20m in the technical/professional sector of the construction industry, the day-to-day business has been run by my fellow directors for several years now. I’m keen to use my knowledge and experience to help the next generation of recruitment entrepreneurs achieve their ambitions.”

GBG, which specialises in identity data intelligence, has enhanced its KnowYourPeople employee screening solution with ‘Right to Work’ management functionality. The company says the new feature will help businesses manage their right-to-work checks on new employees, helping them to avoid £20k fines.

• Global executive search firm Heidrick & Struggles has launched a disruptive innovators team. The team, led by Tim Alexander Lüdke, will work with developing organisations to succeed in their go-to-market strategies by filling important talent gaps, advising on transformation and change management, and accelerating their growth and development.

• The HR Certification Institute has launched HRCI, a suite of on-demand learning and assessment modules to help in talent management.

HRCI is a suite of on-demand learning and assessment modules aimed at raising the bar on the talent management capabilities of global business professionals – both HR and non-HR – who have responsibility for creating high-performing employees, teams and organisations.

Modules, which can be completed at a user’s own pace, will aim to give users the skills and knowledge needed to help organisations avoid risks, optimise performance, engage employees and enhance business outcomes.

• Global staffing and services company Insight Global has announced the formation of its Women’s Leadership Council (WLC). The WLC is charged with empowering, inspiring and developing the company’s current and future female leaders, as a supplement to the company’s existing broader leadership development.

The WLC is comprised of 17 women in varying levels of leadership. The goal is to create opportunities to observe each other and interact with women outside of their own leadership trees through a mentorship programme.

• Recruitment software provider Microdec has launched a new version of its Profile product, which includes tools to help recruiters manage incoming GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) rules compliance.

Start-up of the Month: Reecru

Launched last month by founder Rishi Kapadia, Reecru is an online recruitment agency providing traditional recruitment agency services, through the use of specialist freelance recruiters.

Kapadia explained the way the platform works is it enables the hiring employer to post their requirements on the platform, which is then picked up by a freelance recruiter of their choice. That recruiter then screens all the applicants and shortlists the top candidates for the employer. The recruiter then uses the platform to manage the scheduling of phone calls or face-to-face interviews, as well as providing feedback to candidates.

According to Kapadia, cost is a big unique selling proposition for the business. “We bring down the commission costs. It works on a fixed fee per job, so we charge £999 for each job on a salary of up to £50k. That’s considerably less that your traditional recruitment model.”

Kapadia added the Leicester-based firm has an eye on developing the platform further to work with larger organisations beyond its current client base of small to medium-sized businesses (SMEs). “We’re looking to work with bigger organisations, which have more complex hiring requirements, and hopefully create a system that helps them streamline their recruitment processes,” he said.

“Companies that are lot bigger tend to have complex requirements, culture issues or very technical roles that they’re looking for. Capturing those requirements is a bit difficult on the platform at the minute, so right now we’re focusing on the SMEs but going forward we want to adapt the platform and improve our candidate search methods.”
