Recruiters can carry on using memes after all, says European Parliament

European Parliament MEPs have thrown out proposed changes to European copyright law that could have dramatically affected how recruiters market their business through memes on social media.
Last month, Recruiter reported on proposed rules contained in Article 13 of the Copyright Directive that demand platforms ‘take measures to ensure the functioning of agreements concluded with rights-holders for the use of their works’.
Lawyers warned the proposed rules meant recruiters using memes to market their business could have seen these memes removed by social media platforms, if they were given the go ahead.
And last month, a committee of MEPs approved the proposed rules ahead of them going to the wider European Parliament to vote on.
But the BBC reports the changes were rejected by a margin of 318-278 in the European Parliament yesterday, with MEPs deciding the proposals needed more debate and must now return to the European Commission.
