Yorkshire-based recruiters have embraced remote working to mitigate the worst effects of the recent December floods.

Over the Christmas period the city of York was flooded as local rivers the Foss and Ouse burst their banks due to heavy downpours.

But as with Cumbrian recruiters, agencies in the area found a way to continue operating in the face of rising water levels.

Danielle Parker, branch manager at the York office of multi-sector recruiter Yorkshire Staffing Services, told Recruiter her firm went down the path of remote working to allow consultants to carry on working using their mobile phones.

Parker added some helpful clients had even allowed the recruiter use of their offices to interview candidates.

For Ali Stewart, acting branch manager at technical and industrial recruiter Spring Personnel, the floods have had a marginal effect on business, due to the inability to interview candidates at the York office. However, again consultants used mobiles to continue recruiting when the city didn’t have access to internet or landline phones as a result of the BT Exchange building being flooded between 27 and 28 December. 

According to Stewart, Spring’s York branch had been enjoying a busier than normal December, while Stewart herself helped clean up the office in the period between Christmas and New Year. 

Recruiter also contacted agencies operating in other flood hit areas such as Ayrshire in Scotland but had not heard back by deadline.

While a number of flood warnings are in place today for Aberdeenshire in Scotland, recruiters, who did not wish to be named, told Recruiter they have been unaffected so far.
