Recruiters have ‘in-built bias’ to older candidates claims Altmann

Recruitment companies should be “taken to the Equality and Human Rights Commission” (EHRC) when they fail to ensure fairness for older people seeking work, the government’s champion for the rights of older workers has said.
Tue, 10 Mar 2015Recruitment companies should be “taken to the Equality and Human Rights Commission” (EHRC) when they fail to ensure fairness for older people seeking work, the government’s champion for the rights of older workers has said.

In an exclusive interview with The Independent newspaper, Dr Ros Altmann said that evidence revealed “an in-built bias” among recruitment businesses and employers with regard to employing the over-50s.

The bias is particularly acute towards women, Altmann said.

“I am recommending that there should be proper penalties for employers who flout the law,” Altmann said.

“Recruitment firms should be taken to the EHRC if they do not abide by rules that will ensure fairness for older people wanting to find work.”

Taking action against recruitment firms is one of Altmann’s 12 recommendations for action in her report to be launched on Wednesday [11 March] at the House of Commons, the newspaper reported. The event launch will be attended by star model Twiggy.
