Report on Jobs: Demand for perm nurses at highest ever level

Demand for permanent nurses is at its highest level in the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC)/KPMG ‘Report on Jobs’ history.
Fri, 6 Jan 2015Demand for permanent nurses is at its highest level in the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC)/KPMG ‘Report on Jobs’ history.

It is also the highest for any profession since 1997’s peak demand for IT contractors.

According to the January issue of the report, released today (6 February), demand for nurses has soared to 83.8 points on the index, up from 67.1 year-on-year. Any reading over 50 indicates growth.

Over all, the report showed permanent and temporary placements continued to grow, although the rate of growth is slowing. Starting salaries also continued to rise.

However, the availability of people to fill permanent roles fell further during January.

The Midlands registered the fastest increase in both temp and perm placements in the month.

Bernard Brown, partner and head of business services at KPMG, said in a statement: “They say good news comes in threes and it certainly seems to be the case for the UK economy. The past month has seen a rise in employment, a jump in the number of jobs being created and a growing number of firms prepared to pay more to land the best staff.”

The report is based on responses from 400 UK recruitment and employment consultancies. The REC has collected and released data monthly since October 1997.
