BAE Systems on hunt for team players

Thu, 8 Jan 2015BAE Systems is seeking motivated team players to fill 710 apprenticeships in 2015, according to the defence firm’s head of early career programmes Richard Hamer.

The apprentices will join in September with two thirds of the new roles hired in engineering-related roles. The apprentices will be employed across 14 of BAE Systems’ aerospace, security and defence sites around the UK.

Some new recruits will be based at the firm’s submarine design and manufacturing site in Barrow-in-Furness shipyard in Cumbria. The shipyard will deliver five Astute-class attack submarines and develop the new Successor submarines scheduled to replace the Vanguard-class of submarines from 2028.

Hamer told Recruiter the roles are to be advertised on the firm’s apprentice recruitment website.

Most of the vacancies will have a February 2015 deadline for applications.

Hamer says the wide variety of roles necessitate different requirements: “Firstly, there will be minimum academic requirements for each role – these will be specified for each role on the site.

“Secondly, we will be looking for people with good interpersonal skills, demonstrating an ability to learn to communicate well in a business environment and work well in teams,” he told Recruiter.

According to Hamer, candidates must also have the right behaviours to succeed in work such as “motivation, enthusiasm and commitment” to ensure they succeed and can fit in with BAE’s work environment.

“Lastly for some craft apprentice positions we will test for manual dexterity, which is crucial in some roles,” he added.
