Fri, 5 Dec 2014 | By Sarah MarquetUK-based innovative online intern recruitment specialist Intern Avenue is to expand its services into Europe with support from Vodafone’s philanthropic arm, the Vodafone Foundation.

The deal, announced at the Vodafone Foundation and Vodafone Institute’s Digitising Europe event in Berlin yesterday, will enable thousands of students and graduates across the continent to connect with suitable employers.

Speaking at the event, Intern Avenue founder and chief executive Dupsy Abiola told Recruiter the deal was “really, really exciting” and a “wonderful opportunity”.

“They [the Vodafone Foundation] are passionate about helping young people find work and we believe the way to do that is to make the talent pool more discoverable,” she said.

Intern Avenue’s software uses a data-scoring system to match candidates with companies that provide paid internships. About 40,000 candidates and 2,000 employers have registered with it.

Abiola said the company would continue to focus on the UK while working with Vodafone and a network of academics across Europe to determine the best way to support new candidates and employers across the continent.

Challenges would be posed by differing languages and education systems, she added.

Funding from the foundation will help Intern Avenue develop a mobile solution, Abiola said.

Vodafone said in a statement that the partnership follows an independent report commissioned by the Vodafone Institute which recommended that digital services that match young people with employment opportunities should be expanded across Europe.

The report, by independent think-tank the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, recommended that public- and private-sector organisations should expand their investment in digital recruitment services to improve access to careers information and potential employers for a new generation of Europeans seeking to enter the workplace for the first time.
