Recruiters working in the US may soon have millions more workers to choose from after an immigration overhaul allowing illegal immigrants to apply for work permits.
Millions of immigrants who have lived in the US for five years and are parents of US citizens or legal residents will be allowed to apply for work permits lasting three years.
In a message to Democrat supporters, President Barack Obama said: “Every day we delay [the vote to pass immigration reforms], our country and our economy suffer. Millions of families go on living in the shadows, without a chance to pay their taxes or do what's necessary to get on the right side of the law.
“So, just like every president in the last 70 years – Republican and Democrat – I'm taking steps in my power to help fix this broken immigration system.”
The BBC reported last week that about 4m people could benefit from the reforms, which were forced through by executive orders, allowing Obama to bypass Congress.
Obama announced the changes in a speech at the White House on Thursday night.
