Mon, 3 Nov 2014Karen Carberry, the former finance director for multi-sector, global recruiter Reed, was jailed at the Old Bailey on Friday for fraud amounting to more than £300k, the Daily Mail reported.
Carberry, who lied about her qualifications to get the job at Reed 11 years ago, spent the money on designer shoes, handbags, holidays, a hot tub, DVDs, computer games and gifts for her disabled daughter.
She got away with the fraud for more than three years before one of her juniors became suspicious about accounting errors.
Reed bosses then discovered she was not even a qualified accountant, and had used a forged certificate and bogus CV to get the job.
Judge Wendy Joseph QC was reported as saying Carberry had not shown any remorse.
“You have lied and lied again and blamed everyone you could, from those above you to the employees below you, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and Equifax.”
She was in control of the company’s Malta accounts when she began siphoning off a total of £303,317.60 into her personal accounts.
She denied but was convicted of obtaining a pecuniary advantage by deception between 1 July, 2001 and 31 July, 2001, fraud by abuse of position between 6 August 2009 and 9 July 2012, and two counts of using a false instrument between 13 August and 29 August 2012.
When contacted by Recruiter, a Reed spokesperson said the company would not be making a statement on the issue.
