Angel Merkel’s government has agreed to impose a quota system to get more women into the boardrooms of Germany’s largest companies, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph

Under the proposed law, which will apply from 2016, large, publicly listed companies will need to make sure 30% of seats on boards are taken by women. It was also reported that Germany is the largest European country to introduce such quotas for women in the boardroom, after Italy, Norway and Holland.

Currently, less than 20% of boardroom positions in Germany are occupied by women, according to broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
