The Department of Health (DoH) has commissioned a review to look at ‘options’ for NHS Professionals, including a potential sale.
It confirmed that accountancy firm Deloitte had been appointed to review the state-owned staffing agency, which is the main supplier of temporary staff to the NHS. A DoH spokesperson told Recruiter that no timeframe had been set for the review but it could be completed in the next six months.
A statement from DoH said: "To make the NHS safer and more efficient we want to improve the way it uses temporary staff and reduce its reliance on expensive agency workers.
"We have commissioned a study looking at a range of options, including the future of NHS Professionals, which we will carefully consider before making any decisions.”
NHS Professionals’ annual report revealed that the staffing agency suffered a £6.7m loss in 2009/10 but recovered this the following year, and in 2012/13 achieved a £6.1m profit before tax.
According to the DoH the agency uses a national bank of around 50,000 flexible workers and fills around 2m shifts a year.
