Mon, 29 Sep 2014The US Department of Defense is relaxing its rules around the recruitment of illegal immigrants, according to Military Times.
Military recruiters are already allowed to search for foreigners with unique skills, but the policy is to be extended to illegal immigrants who entered the country before they turned 16.
The number will reportedly be capped at 1,500 recruits a year. They also need to be approved by a 2012 government policy known as Deferred Action for Child Arrivals.
The publication reported the military as recruiting about 5,000 non-citizens per year and since 2006, accepting more non-permanent citizens, depending on their skills.
The announcement, made on Friday, comes at the same time as the army has been making cuts to its active-duty ranks.
