Gaulbert Pereira, the Association of Professional Staffing Companies’ (APSCo’s) new managing director of Asia, says Singapore and Hong Kong are hot markets for recruiters.
He was introduced to APSCo members at a meeting on Thursday (18 September) and subsequently told Recruiter there was huge competition for jobs and talent in the Asian countries, providing excellent space for recruiters.
Job creation was continuing to grow in the “buoyant market” and was expected to increase over the next few years.
Singapore and Hong Kong, said Gaulbert, had the advantage of being areas where English is widely used and they should be looked on as “the doorways to Asia”.
There was also a lot of business to be had in the rest of China, he said.
The challenge for UK recruiters moving into the region was strong competition from Australia, which has the added benefit of being geographically close.
Although “very, very hard” to get a job in Singapore, his advice for recruiters was to “just turn up, spend a month, look around and you’ll find it [a job]”.
“It is risky but I don’t know anyone [in recruitment] that hasn’t been successful.”
Pereira, who was born in Singapore, has worked in recruitment for about 20 years both in large and small organisations, as well as owning his own business.
Currently working in the Singapore office of recruitment company InterQuest, he has been on the receiving end of what APSCo can offer, “hence my passion for working with them”.
He moved to Singapore 18 months ago, coincidentally about the same time as the APSCo Asia office was opened.
“I wanted to find out about my culture, my country.”
He leaves the UK to return to Singapore on Wednesday and will soon start his new role with APSCo.
