Thu, 18 Sep 2014The Royal Mail has begun recruiting seasonal staff for the Christmas period and will announce plans next week to hire up to 20,000 temporary staff.
Last year, the London-listed company recruited 21,000 additional staff – 18,000 in England, 2,000 in Scotland, 700 in Wales and 400 in Northern Ireland – to help sort post and deliver parcels.
Meanwhile, US courier companies UPS and FedEx are set to take on tens of thousands of seasonal workers in anticipation of a 17% surge in holiday e-commerce transactions.
UPS, which was caught up last year in chaotic congestion that marred the holiday season especially related to the delivery of Amazon’s goods, said it will hire 95,000 workers, almost double the figure it took on last year.
Fellow delivery company FedEx, meanwhile, said it is to take on an extra 50,000 staff, with online retailing in the run-up to the Christmas period expected to rise 17% to more than $72bn (£44bn).
