The data shows there has been growth in many industries over the last decade with the biggest margins recorded in building workers, and professional and other service providers, such as the hip-swivelling dancers.
At the end of March, 22% of the country’s 4.5m self-employed had been working for themselves for more than 10 years, while another 24% had been doing so for 20 years or more.
Meanwhile, a quarter of people who became self-employed after losing their job in the past five years would prefer to return to a salaried position, according to a survey conducted for the Resolution Foundation.
