Tue, 29 Apr 2014The US Department of Labor yesterday [28 April] made available up to $150m (£89m) in funding through a new job-driven National Emergency Grant programme.
The programme aims to train workers who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own for work in high-demand industries.
Grants ranging from $500k (£297k) to $6m are being made available to states, territories and federally-recognised tribes through the Workforce Investment Act Dislocated Worker National Reserve fund, a fund designed to support the co-ordination, development and provision of training and staff development to states and local areas.
These investments will help create or expand employer partnerships that provide opportunities for on-the-job training, registered apprenticeships or other occupational training that results in an industry-recognised credential.
Funding will also be used to provide services, such as coaching, counselling and direct job placement, that help match laid-off workers, including the long-term unemployed, with available jobs.
