Tue, 22 Apr 2014At a visit to a community college outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, President Obama and vice-president Joe Biden announced grants worth $150m (£89m) to expand apprenticeships.
In the US, community colleges are considered one of the ways to train workers with the vocational skills they need for a job. For the last three years, the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training initiative has provided funding to more than 800 such colleges. The colleges are typically two-year institutions attended by many after graduating from high school at about age 18.
The community colleges can either provide an academic education geared to support students who will later attend a full four-year university or offer vocational skills training to those who do not plan to earn a bachelor’s degree.
The president also announced a $450m grant programme to expand partnerships between community colleges, the workforce system, employers and national industry groups.
