Tue, 29 Apr, 2014Nigerian interior minister Abba Moro has refused to reimburse jobseekers who attended recruitment events across the country for jobs in his ministry in March, during which 19 people died in stampedes, reports Nigerian media organisation Premium Times.

According to premiumtimesng.com, each of an estimated 71,000 applicants paid NGN1k (£3.69) to the unnamed recruitment firm organising the event.

Following the deaths, Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan decreed that three family members of each of the deceased should be given jobs with the Nigerian Immigration Service, with one of the three being a woman.

Lagos-based lawyer Femi Falana wrote to minister Moro asking him to reimburse the candidates for the fee they paid to the recruitment firm involved. However, Moro responded by saying his ministry did not receive any money from the jobseekers and that he could not issue refunds.
