The number of self-employed workers will outnumber those in the public sector in just four years, according to a new study.
Research conducted by think tank the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA) and e-commerce firm Etsy indicates that the number of people working for themselves will rise above those working for the government as soon as 2018.
In the report, to be published later this year, the RSA predicts that 5m people will be self-employed in 2018, and the public sector workforce will fall to 4.9m.
In the middle of last year, there were 5.7m people working in the public sector, only 18.8% of total employment, the lowest since records began in 1999.
