Ex-Army tank driver turned down for 790 jobs

Wed, 5 Mar 2014The founder of a firm that specialises in placing ex-services personnel into work, tells Recruiter that he finds its “extraordinary” that a former Army tank driver has been turned down for 790 jobs.

According to the Daily Mirror, Carl Randell-Eyre, who served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers for 23 years, has been turned down for jobs for anything from delivery driver to mechanic.

Randell-Eyre tells the Mirror: “They will say things like you don’t have any point-to-point pick-up experience for a delivery job, but I have recovered tanks and dropped them off back at base. Surely that counts?”

Hugh Andrée, founder of ForceSelect, says that the experience of Randell-Eyre from Chard in Somerset is “extraordinary” and that he has never come across a situation where someone who has left the armed forces has been turned down for so many jobs.

After leaving the Army in 2012, Randell-Eyre landed a temporary driving job with Jaguar Land Rover, after which he applied for 582 jobs before he found a six-month job as a chauffeur. Since then he has applied for another 262 jobs without success.

Andrée says he currently has 300 engineering jobs to fill. He adds: “It harder for generalists from both the armoured core and the infantry than for those who have a technical background.

“Generalists need to look for opportunities in operational and project management, and supervisory roles,” he says.

He says that those employers with whom he works that have been successful in hiring  ex-services personnel are those that  “will not judge them to what they can’t do but what they can do and build  on that  based on their real-life experiences."

The Mirror says that Randell-Eye has now turned to Twitter to find work.

Andree says that while the use of social media to find work has become popular among ex-service personnel, “it won’t necessarily guarantee the right job”.
