The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) has issued more than 2.6m checks on employees in the financial year 2013-14 (to date), nearly 600,000 fewer than the previous recorded period.

This comprised of more than 2.4m enhanced checks and more than 184,000 standard checks, according to a response to a Freedom of Information request.

This compares with more than 3.17m checks issued in the whole of 2012-13, made up of 2.92m enhanced checks and 257,000 standard checks.

A standard check looks for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and final warnings.

An enhanced check is the same as the standard check, but includes any additional information held by local police that is considered relevant to the role involved, such as working with children.
