Siemens, the multinational engineering and electronics manufacturer, is to invest £160m in wind turbine production and installation facilities in Yorkshire, creating over 1,000 jobs across two sites in the process.
Siemens says 550 jobs will be created at its factory in Paull, East Riding, with another 450 jobs to be created at the Green Port Hull turbine construction, assembly and service facility (see artist's impression, right).
A spokesperson for Siemens tells Recruiter: “Today’s announcement is very positive news for the jobs market. Our recruitment plans will be in line with project milestones over the next period of planning and construction up to 2017. We are committed to training and employing as many local people as possible.”
Additional jobs will also be created during construction and indirectly in the supply chain.
However, Dan Benson, head of oil, gas and renewable at Cooper Lomaz tells Recruiter that because of a shortage of people in the UK with the right skills Siemens will find it difficult to fill the vacancies. “We lack the skills across the board in the UK to build this type of facility... People will have to be shipped over from Germany, Denmark or Norway and removed from existing projects."
Benson adds that employees in this sector take years to train, and there is a lack of apprentices coming through.
The German firm had been working on plans to invest £80m, which would have led to 700 jobs, but decided to revise its plans, giving a boost to the offshore wind industry.
