School leavers entering the workplace are lacking in basic skills such as punctuality, manners and the ability to hold conversations, according to employers.

A survey of business leaders by Barclays found that many believed teenagers struggled to adapt to the most basic entry-level jobs because of an inability to perform simple tasks.

The study warned that the “glaring gap” in career advice and support in schools had left large numbers of young people lacking the skills needed in the workplace.
