Britain has one of the highest proportion of low-skilled jobs among countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) except Spain, with more than one in five roles requiring no more than primary education.

According to a new report from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), 30% of workers were overqualified for their jobs and there were far fewer graduate jobs than graduates.

The research found that 22% of UK jobs required no more than primary education, compared with less than 5% in Germany and Sweden.

Peter Cheese, CIPD chief executive, said: “We’ve been increasing the supply of skills without increasing UK productivity or the number of skilled jobs in the economy.

“We now need to improve skills utilisation and stimulate demand for higher level skills through increasing the number of higher skilled roles available.
