According to PeoplePerHour, more than 2.7 million people work in retail, with a total of 984,000 employed by the ‘big four’ supermarkets – Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrison – alone.

Construction is the UK’s next biggest employer, with 1.8m workers, followed by engineering (800,000), teaching (610,000) and nursing 370,000.
