Charles Elvin, chief executive officer of the Institute of Leadership & Management, which ran the survey, says: “The New Year is always a popular time for workers to look ahead and think about how they can progress.”

Steve Orr, regional managing director at Hays, tells recruiter.co.uk: “We always see an upturn in candidate registrations and applications in January, and this year there is far more positivity in the market, which is pushing them even higher.

“Candidates are more confident about their prospects and many are looking for a new challenge in 2014, after a couple of years of biding their time. We’re extremely busy with new jobs, so there’s plenty of reason for candidates to consider what options might be suitable for them.”

The top three New Year’s resolutions for the workplace were to improve work-life balance at 31%, to get more training or a new qualification 28% and to become a better manager 13%.
