Skills transfer key to AMEC cleaning up in talent market

Tue, 10 Dec 2013Engineering firm AMEC says it is actively recruiting staff from a broad range of industry backgrounds to create a “better, more dynamic and more capable workforce” in its expanding clean energy division.

Clean Energy Europe is looking to take on 300 new staff in the North-West, as reported by recruiter.co.uk in late October.

Mike Houghton, the division’s engineering, technical and project management director, tells recruiter.co.uk: “What we see quite frequently in engineering projects and other services we offer is that you don’t need to have 10 years’ skills in say nuclear engineering. Ten years of project management, be it in health, banking or whatever – these are transferrable.”

He adds that the advantage of transferring experienced people from other industries is that they can provide them with two or three week-long courses, rather than sending them on lengthy training programmes to fill in the smaller details.

“The barrier is the language, and the familiarity with particular processes, acronyms, etc,” Houghton says.

He also says that rather than having to seek them out, AMEC’s clean energy division has had lots of people with experience in other industries come to them direct, saying: “This is an exciting industry to be in these days.”
