Mon, 9 Dec 2013A UN forum in Geneva has demonstrated that business understanding of and engagement with human rights issues is on the rise, according to the president of the International Confederation of Private Employment Agencies (Ciett).
Fred Van Haasteren was speaking to recruiter.co.uk after talking and leading sessions at the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights last week.
He notes that the number of attendees present had doubled this year to 2,000. A major point of discussion both years has been the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, endorsed by the UN in 2011.
“I see a growing awareness for this topic… there is a growing understanding of the need to implement these guidelines,” he comments.
The international staffing industry leader also says the event organisers found that around 30% of attendees were from the business world, a larger share than in 2012. “They [the organisers] want to have more people from the business side,” he says.
Van Haasteren is an advisor to global staffing giant Randstad, having retired from an executive role at the company on being appointed Ciett president.
