US Senate passes bill protecting LGBT workplace rights

The US Senate has passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which bans discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals in the workplace.
Fri, 8 Nov 2013The US Senate has passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which bans discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals in the workplace.

The act, which was approved 64-32 in a vote, still has to pass the House of Representatives, where it might still be voted down by Republicans.

President Barack Obama urged the representatives to carry the act, saying: “One party in one house of Congress should not stand in the way of millions of Americans who want to go to work each day and simply be judged by the job they do.”

Labor secretary Thomas E Perez, clearly in an oratorical mood, comments: “The arc of the moral universe bent a little more toward justice today. Protecting the workplace rights of LGBT workers is a moral imperative that is long overdue.

“We still have a long road ahead of us, but today's historic vote moves us one step closer to a nation that truly embodies its founding principles of equality, opportunity and fairness for all.”
