Fri, 29 Nov 2013October saw France’s unemployment rate drop for the first time since April 2011, with this reduction mainly coming from those aged under 25.
The rate of joblessness fell to 10.9%, with 3.27m people registering as jobless at France’s Pôle Emploi job centres. This is down 20,500 month before. There were 2.7m unemployed at the start of 2011.
However, 25,100 fewer people under 25 were unemployed, meaning that unemployment actually rose among the older generations. This is the sixth consecutive month in which youth unemployment has fallen.
“The figures published today confirm that the battle for jobs can be won,” comments President François Hollande.
France’s unemployment rate has been almost exactly level with the EU-wide average throughout 2013.
