Mon, 30 Sep 2013Private postal operator TNT Post is to create 1,200 new jobs in Greater Manchester in November, as a spokesperson for the firm tells recruiter.co.uk it is “definitely” still on course with its plan to create 20,000 jobs by 2017.
TNT is to open 11 new delivery units in Bury, Manchester, Salford, Trafford and Wigan, enabling the firm to deliver to all households and businesses with M postcodes with its bicycle-only service.
The company spokesperson says that the firm’s “main two” recruitment channels are Jobcentre Plus and work programme provider Avanta.
It will also use its own pre-employment training course to recruit. The programme provided nearly a fifth of new hires when the firm announced 500 new jobs in South-West London this summer.
Roles range from postal delivery personnel to back office support, with the company say that “the flexible nature of the work makes the jobs ideal for local residents, including women returning to work, second jobbers, those balancing childcare commitments and school/college leavers”.
Nick Wells, the chief executive officer at TNT Post, comments: “The postal industry is undergoing great change and I am proud that TNT Post is able to create new jobs for people who need them and also to provide career opportunities for those who want to progress in a growing company.”
The 2006 liberalisation of the UK postal market has allowed TNT Post to further its reach, announcing in July 2012 the plan to create 20,000 new jobs over the next five years.
Minister for employment Mark Hoban MP comments: “Their record of offering opportunities to young people and long-term unemployed is impressive, and I welcome the fact that they will be working closely with Jobcentre Plus and the Work Programme to fill these vacancies.”
Barbara Spicer, CEO of Salford City Council and board member for Greater Manchester Combined Authority, adds: “I’m particularly impressed by TNT Post’s record for taking on people with little or no qualifications and equipping them with the skills they need to participate fully in the modern economy and achieve their true potential.”
