The Prime Minister has backed a new strategy, launched yesterday, identifying core strengths and growth and job opportunities for the UK defence sector.

‘Securing Prosperity – a strategic vision for the UK Defence Sector’ was published by the Defence Growth Partnership, a forum set up by David Cameron last year and attended by the government, top UK defence firms and SMEs, and the sector trade association ADS.
It identifies skills as one of the strengths that needs to be maximised, by “developing the next generation of apprentices, technicians, engineers and other professionals”.
The government says it is committed to creating the conditions that industry needs to continue to generate the innovation, well-paid jobs and high-value exports that are critical to long-term, balanced economic growth”.
The sector currently employs 100,000 people across the UK, and 2012 defence exports generated £8.8bn.
Cameron comments: “The Defence Growth Partnership sets us and industry a joint challenge to deliver a long-term strategic vision to maintain our position on the leader board – maximising opportunities for British business and further strengthening the economy.”
