Tue, 10 Sep 2013Car maker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced an investment “approaching £1.5bn” in UK operations at its Solihull manufacturing facility, creating 1,700 jobs.
JLR is introducing what it calls “an all-new technically-advanced aluminium vehicle architecture in forthcoming models”.
A spokesperson for the company describes the new roles at the rapidly-expanding firm as “primarily manufacturing and product engineering roles”, telling recruiter.co.uk that they will be recruiting in the middle of next year.
And the spokesperson says that while recruitment will primarily take place through the firm’s careers website, the HR team are “continually” looking for new ways to recruit. This is especially with regards three problem areas: bringing enough women into the business to ensure a good gender balance, getting experienced engineers and, as reported by recruiter.co.uk last month, finding purchasing managers.
JLR’s new roles will bring the total number of UK manufacturing roles announced by the firm in the last three years to almost 11,000, with the last major job announcement coming in February.
The firm estimates that the 11,000 internal positions will eventually create “an additional 24,000 positions in the supply chain”.
JLR also says it “acknowledges the continued support of its stakeholders in support of our growth plans, in particular, our workforce, the UK government, including supporting our broader investment [through the Regional Growth Fund], and the efforts of local government to enable the expansion of our sites”.
The news has been welcomed by the government, including business secretary Vince Cable and Prime Minister David Cameron, who says that the government’s automotive industrial strategy “will help to continue this success for years to come”.
Among other recent boosts for the UK automotive sector are Bentley’s July announcement of 1,000 new jobs through an £800m investment, and the news last week that Nissan had gotten the go-ahead for a £250m investment bringing another 1,000 jobs.
