Tue, 3 Sep 2013Outsourcing firm MITIE and construction giant Skanska are among the first employers training up the much-needed next generation of UK engineers by offering a new Higher Apprenticeship in Engineering Environmental Technologies.

Alongside 12 Skanska apprentices and six at MITIE, others companies including plumbers Duel Services, electricians Dual Bound and facilities management firm SPIE Matthew Hall have already confirmed they are creating more than 40 of these apprenticeships, with a further 53 expected to be created shortly elsewhere in the sector.

Paul Jackson, chief executive officer of sector body EngineeringUK, welcomes the progress, commenting: “It’s crucial to the economy that higher level skills are in place.

“This year’s EngineeringUK Report identifies the need for close to 70,000 people qualified in engineering disciplines at level three and above each year, more than double the existing numbers.”

All the apprentices will train in the workplace and with one of nine regional training providers, each with strong engineering expertise. This includes City and Islington College in London, which was the lead developer for the new Higher Apprenticeship.

Earlier this summer, Prime Minister David Cameron lent his support to a new scheme designed to add 100,000 engineering technicians to the UK’s skill-short technical industries by 2018.
