The Midlands is the place to be for recruitment – with a rise in hiring in both permanent and temporary roles bucking a national trend, finds the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG Report on Jobs.
Thu, 9 May 2013The Midlands is the place to be for recruitment – with a rise in hiring in both permanent and temporary roles bucking a national trend, finds the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG Report on Jobs.

Across the UK the hiring of temporary workers dropped, as recruitment for permanent staff rose at a quicker pace in April than it had in March, reaccelerating hiring following the slight decrease of the past six months.

After the period up to and around Christmas saw heightened temp demand, non-permanent recruitment levels dropped for the first time in nine months, although they rose in the North, alongside the Midlands.

The split between perm and temp recruitment is mirrored when the data, collected from a panel of 400 UK recruitment firms, is divided into public and private sectors.

Having been separated from construction for the first time by the REC’s report, engineering was the sector with the highest demand for permanent staff, and second-highest on the contract side.

The trend seen since the start of 2010 for stuttering and modest pay rises for both permanent and temporary roles continued with slightly weaker growth than seen previously, although permanent pay was down in London.

REC chief executive officer Kevin Green says: “Recruiters are reporting a renewed sense of purpose from their clients, with employers making hiring decisions more quickly than before. All the feedback from recruiters is that employers intend to continue to increase their use of flexible staffing in the months ahead.”

On the second point Bernard Brown, partner and head of Business Services at KPMG, adds: “The data suggests that optimism is lower when temporary roles are considered and there are also still too many inconsistencies across the UK to hint at recovery.”
