A documentary, commissioned by specialist wireless and communications recruiter Campbell Black, premiered in London last night, highlighting how techniques used to analyse data in elite American sport could help recruiters up their game.

Before the projector began to roll, Campbell Black director, Rob Symes, told the audience of clients, potential clients, friends and family: “The world has a prediction problem. We love to predict the future, but we are not very good at it.”

This, he said, has direct implications for recruiters, who he claimed wasted billions of pounds a year hiring people who weren’t suitable.

The documentary, entitled The Outside View, followed Symes as the toured the US for seven weeks speaking to a variety of experts on how the use of data analytics had helped US football and baseball assess who was likely to be successful in the professional game.

Last night’s premiere, screened at the Barbican Centre, was ahead of a new company due to be launched by Symes that will help companies and recruiters use data analytics to improve their selection performance.
